Summer in the City...almost
ActNow FoundationIt's not summer yet, but New York is on fire. Salsa Mondays kicks off Monday May 11th at Tavern on the Green. Although general admission is $10, if you're on the Soul Latino guest list, you get in free before 7PM.
How's that for an after work wind-down? Dancing under the stars never felt better! Unless of course, you're watching movies under the stars...
This summer the line up of movies and places to be seen is excuisite! There's just so much to do in so little time.
Movies under the stars begin to take place in places like Bryant Park, River Flicks, even short films on rooftops with Rooftop Films, which kicks off May 15th - September 20th. http://www.rooftopfilms.com/summerseries.html
Here's Rooftop Film's May 15th Line Up:

Venue: On the Open Road Rooftop above New Design High School
Address: 350 Grand St. @ Essex (Lower East Side, Manhattan)
Rain: In the event of rain the show will be Sun 5/17 at the same location. Check www.rooftopfilms.com or call 718-417-7362 on the day of the event if the weather seems questionable.
Speaking of underground movies, the ActNow Foundation is kicking off an event with Council Member Letitia James at the historical BAM Cinema in Brooklyn. This event is sponsored by Crème Magazine (I know a shameless plug!). However, we are looking for short films and features by filmmakers of color. Details below:
ActNow Foundation, in conjunction with the office Council Member Letitia James, is developing a partnership with the historic, world-renowned Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). We are in search of new projects for an upcoming film screening series, beginning in August 2009, which will include feature films and short films mirroring the experiences of the African Diaspora.
The deadline to submit films for consideration in the first series is May 20th, 2009. All films must be produced and/or directed by, and star, people of African descent and be no less than 72 minutes in length for feature films, or no longer than 15 minutes for short films.
Screener copies must be sent on DVD movie format to ActNow Foundation's office located at 138 South Oxford Street, Studio C; Brooklyn, NY 11217. Also, include a SASE if returning the materials is requested. Further details regarding screening dates, submissions and event sponsorship opportunities will be released in weeks to come. If you have any specific questions please contact ActNow at info@actnowproduction.org.
