KRS-1 Rocked Habana
HabanaEveryone knows that the place to be every summer is Habana Outpost--one of the first eco-eateries in New York!
"Eco-Eateries are restaurants that use earth-friendly practices in their design, construction, and day-to-day operations. Habana Outpost aims to reduce wasteful consumption and promote sustainable solutions."
Their biggest restaurant is in Brooklyn's trendy Fort Greene neighborhood (where I live). Their other locations are, "Manhattan's Cafe Habana and Habana To Go, opened by Sean Meenan in 1998, serve home-style Latin food with unique Cuban and Central Mexican accents. Habana Outpost, located in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, shares the same celebrated cuisine but also functions as a community gathering space. Regardless of the location, the food is renowned and the atmosphere welcoming."
One of the main reasons people go are for the grilled Mexican corn, which is an absolute addiction! In addition to their outdoor vendor space where local designers (clothing, jewelry, hats) converge from 12-6. There are also really great slushy drinks like frozen mojitoes in flavors like mango and guava.
I checked out their block party this Saturday to sell a few t-shirts from my t-shirt line tamBöi (pronounced TOMBOY). A line I decided to launch after deciding that women are Godmothers too! Right? So, I turned famous male icons into women, like Che Guevara ("Chi") or my female Tony Montana (with an "i"). I was so excited to chill, listen to the music of reggae band "Under the Rasta Influence and sell, sell, sell!
My "Godmother" tees were going extremely fast because of the Mother's Day holiday...which made my day!
However, what topped off the sunny Saturday was KRS-1 who rolled into the joint old school style and rocked the crowd for a good 30 minutes. Fulton street was packed! Traffic stopped and people on all sides of the streets gathered to get a glimpse and rock to the sounds of his classics like "My Philosophy" and "The Bridge is Over" He even rocked the mic for the children in the front row by offering them an "educated rhyme."
Even the youth have a reason to hang at Habana, according to their fun site, "Everyone's heard the saying "The children are the future"- it kind of goes without saying. But what are people doing to strengthen that future today? At Habana Outpost we are not just about good times and great food - we are dedicated to kids and to assuring them the brightest future imaginable. "
"Our Kid's Corner offers eco-based projects and programs that entertain and help bring an understanding of our beautiful and fragile environment. Outpost's exclusive "Alternative Heroes Coloring Book" will empower your child - not with xray vision but with the inspiring stories of people who overcame staggering odds and made a real difference in the world. Even our Kid's Parties strive to strengthen your child's mind and fuel their imagination and not just feed their stomachs."
I always have so much fun when I hang at the Outpost, and can't wait to go back...for the corn...a vending booth and great music! And oh, they also offer outdoor movies on Sunday nights beginning at 8PM sharp.
Habana is now open 7 days a week from 12-12. Stop by!
