New Movie Watch: Adam and An Education

AdamAdamThe last 2 weeks have been busy with movies, old and new…starting with the 20th Anniversary Celebration of "Do The Right Thing."  Everyone including John Turturro (Transformers) were present, in addition to cast members Samuel L. Jackson, Rosie Perez and Danny Aiello.

It was a beautiful evening to reminisce an d celebrate on a film that Spike Lee created before any of these people were big stars.

Everyone who knows me, knows that I’m a big film buff, and I’m excited to see the following new releases which I will screen tomorrow and into next week.  Here’s the snapshot:

An Education:

"It’s 1961 and attractive, bright 16-year-old schoolgirl, Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is poised on the brink of womanhood, dreaming of a rarefied, Gauloise-scented existence as she sings along to Juliette Greco in her bedroom. Stifled by the tedium of adolescent routine, Jenny can’t wait for adult life to begin.  Meanwhile, she’s a diligent student, excelling in every subject except the Latin that her father is convinced will land her the place she dreams of at Oxford University. One rainy day, her suburban life is upended by the arrival of an unsuitable suitor, 30-ish David (Peter Sarsgaard).  Urbane and witty, David instantly unseats Jenny’s stammering schoolboy admirer, Graham (Matthew Beard).  To her frank amazement, he even manages to charm her conservative parents Jack (Alfred Molina) and Marjorie (Cara Seymour), and effortlessly overcomes any instinctive objections to their daughter’s older, Jewish suitor.Very quickly, David introduces Jenny to a glittering new world of classical concerts and late-night suppers with his attractive friend and business partner, Danny (Dominic Cooper) and Danny’s girlfriend, the beautiful but vacuous Helen (Rosamund Pike).  David replaces Jenny’s traditional education with his own version, picking her up from school in his Bristol roadster and whisking her off to art auctions and smoky clubs."Although this movie takes place in 1961, it reminds me of what it may have been like for those coming to New York in the 80’s getting lost and whisked away into the naked city.  I will tell you all bout it after I see the film!

Next up, Frankie Faison, most known for his role in HBO’s hit series The Wire, joins (Hugh Dancy) and (Rose Byrne) in the cast of Adam.  A film summed up as “a story about two strangers, one a little stranger than the other.”

This is a romantic comedy about a handsome but intriguing young man who has all his life led a sheltered existence - until he meets his new neighbor, Beth (Rose Byrne, "Damages," 28 WEEKS LATER, KNOWING), a beautiful, cosmopolitan young woman who pulls him into the outside world, with funny, touching and entirely unexpected results.  But isn’t that what love does?

The day after the screening I will have a one on one interview with Mr. Frankie Faison about his new role and what we can expect from this darling of a movie.

I look forward to seeing this film.  Wish you can join me!
