Rooftop Film's August Line-Up

Rooftop Films has gained so much buzz, that now they're moving off the roof and into neighboring boroughs.  Their eighteen remaining screenings include stunning short films, fantastic fiction and daring documentary features. In keeping with our programming goals of bringing you films you won't see anywhere else, three feature films are NY, US and World Premieres: St. Nick (August 28), the acclaimed neo-Badlands pre-teen fiction from David Lowery; Rock Heart Beijing (August 21), a political rock n roll doc from China, and Burning in the Sun (Sept. 19), which tells the story of a young man bringing solar power to his native Mali (the screening itself will be held at Solar One, and will be solar powered!)

KANGOL KID Celebrates his Birthday and Hip Hop Legends!

When I first heard the song "Roxanne, Roxanne" by UTFO, I couldn't help but get caught onto to the contagious rhymes.  Now Kangol Kid, one of the pioneers of rap is celebrating a Birthday bash and Celebrities and Hip Hop Legends Come Together to Celebrate and Honor One of Their Own--and guess what?  It's this Friday!


The bash will broadcast live on NY radio station 98.7 Kiss FM with host Fred Buggs and music by the legendary Kool DJ Red Alert.

The West Indian American Day Carnival Association kicks things off with steel pan music, stilt walkers, Carnival costumes, and more.


Spoken Word Open Mic


5–6:30 p.m.


The enchanting Aracelis Girmay hosts a poetry open mic with featured artists from Urban Word NYC, Cheryl Boyce Taylor and Alexis Marie. Rain Plan: Rubin Pavilion, 1st Floor.


5:30–6:30 p.m.


The Brooklyn-based troupe Conjunto Nuevo Milenio showcases the Afro-Latino roots of Panamanian carnival with music and dance. Free tickets (340) are available at the Visitor Center at 5 p.m.

DHDHThe summer is not over, but Fall is coming back with a slew of hits.  For the last month of summer, the Teen Choice Awards gets under way with Three-time Grammy Award winners The Black Eyed Peas, who are set to perform their newest single, “I Gotta Feeling,” from their No. 1 album, “The E.N.D.,” at TEEN CHOICE 2009 airing Monday, Aug. 10 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. MCMCMariah Carey is a comeback queen and fans have clicked in to her new single “Obsessed” which went up for sale at all digital partners.  Yesterday, fans had their alarm clocks set for 12:01 am for their chance to buy her first single.


“Obsessed,” written and produced by Mariah, The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, is the first single pick from MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL, scheduled to arrive in-stores on August 25th.   MEMOIRS was executive-produced by Antonio “L.A.” Reid.

What started off as a soul compilation featuring some of the most influential underground artists has turned into a site for soul music.  Welcome to Suite903 (www.suite903.com), a new site dedicated to exposing and supporting all aspects of Soul music and culture.


I would always get excited when I received a Suite 903 compilation in the mail, because it would mean I’d have the experience of listening to artists who may not get mainstream radio play, but are some of the most talented underground artists and DJ’s in the world.  Featured artists have included SaRa, J Davey, Cool Kids, Wale and others.  DJ’s Drama, Cosi, Rich Medina, Spinna and others have also joined the exclusive CD.
